Cordova Recreation and Park District (CRPD) held a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, April 26th, 2016 to mark the beginning of construction for Heron Landing Community Park.

“Do you hear that sound? That is the sound of progress,” said CRPD Board of Directors Chair Rick Sloan during his opening remarks and referring to the motor graders working in the background.

Heron Landing Park, located at Sunrise Blvd. and Justinian Way, will be the eighth community park in the district. The 20-plus acre park will feature various athletic fields and courts, two playgrounds, a splash park and shaded picnic areas. A community center is also scheduled to be built at a later date.

“The community has anticipated this park and has been very patient through this process,” said CRPD District Administrator Jim Rodems. “The District has turned the corner on the funding and is pleased to get this park accomplished for the community.”

CRPD held several community visioning workshops in 2013 as a key part of the design process. CRPD worked with HLA Landscape Architects to ensure the final design addressed the concerns and desires of the community. The park will be built by Olympic Land Construction and expects to complete the park in spring 2017, dependent on weather conditions.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by community members and local residents, as well as CRPD Board members and local dignitaries including Rancho Cordova City Councilmember Linda Budge and Jonathan Glatz of the Office of Assemblyman Ken Cooley.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my fellow Board members and CRPD staff,” said Sloan. “This is a long awaited step towards completion of what will truly be a magnificent addition to the community.”
