On Tuesday afternoon, a season that started rough but turned around and showed promise to earning a Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berth came to an end for the Cordova High School baseball team.

Making the trek to Stockton to play at McNair, the Lancers were grounded by the Eagles, 7-1 in a non-league game.

“We played well for 5 1/3 (innings),” said Cordova head coach Doug Hughes.

Cordova (5-10 in the Sierra Valley Conference, 6-15-1 overall) trailed 2-1 until the sixth inning. That’s when an error allowed the Eagles to add to their score.

“McNair is a very good team,” Hughes said

Leading hitters for Cordova were Logan Appino and Jeremy Buck, both of whom went 2-for-3. Buck had a double an RBI.

In the SVC finale in Sacramento on May 5th, the Lancers had three hits; Jarrett Harris, Chris Wheat and Buck.

“We tried to play the spoiler,” said Hughes of the SVC race.

On the mound, Harris went the distance for the Lancers. He allowed only three hits and struck out three Wolverine batters.

Halfway through SVC action, Cordova was in the running for the conference’s third and final playoff berth. But Union Mine, Liberty Ranch, El Dorado and Rosemont won a share of the conference title.

The top three teams from the SVC advance into post-season based on head-to-head competition among the four teams. Union Mine, Liberty Ranch and El Dorado advance into the playoffs as the No. 1, 2 and 3 seeds, respectively.
