RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Rancho Cordova City Council members, city staff and Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) recently toured the future site of Mather Veterans Village Phase 4, following the successful securing of $1 million in federal funding for the project. This critical initiative, aimed at addressing homelessness among veterans, underscores a continued commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and revitalizing communities.

Mather Veterans Village represents a collaborative effort between the City of Rancho Cordova, Mercy Housing California, Nation’s Finest and Sacramento County. Phase 4 will see the development of an additional 70 units of permanent supportive housing multifamily apartments, specifically tailored to cater to very low-income homeless and disabled veterans.

“Securing federal funding for Mather Veterans Village Phase 4 is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to support homeless veterans in our community,” said Rancho Cordova Mayor David Sander. “This investment not only provides much-needed additional housing but also reflects our commitment to revitalizing our neighborhoods and ensuring that our veterans have access to the resources and support they deserve.”

Located on the former Mather Air Force Base, the initiative builds upon the success of three previous phases. The first 50 permanent supportive housing units in Phase I were completed in 2016 followed by phases II and III, collectively serving more than 160 formerly homeless veteran households.

“America’s commitment to our veterans lasts a lifetime,” said Representative Ami Bera. "I am pleased to have secured $1 million in federal funding to expand access to housing and supportive services for Sacramento County veterans. Let’s continue to value and recognize our veterans through action, as we build communities that uplift and honor those who have sacrificed so much for our great nation.”

More than 75,000 veterans live in Sacramento County and the area has the second highest percentage of unsheltered homeless veterans in California counties. Despite this need, housing to support the unique needs of homeless and disabled veterans was virtually non-existent until Mather Veterans Village went from idea to reality.

The Mather Veterans Village Phase 4 project aligns with broader efforts to revitalize the area and leverage the proximity to the Sacramento VA Medical Center, ensuring veterans have access to comprehensive support services.

“We are proud to be part of this collaborative effort and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the lives of our veterans,” Mayor Sander added.
