Both the Cordova High School baseball team and Cordova High softball teams had to battle Mother Nature last week.

Scheduled to play Sierra Valley Conference games, Cordova and the Lady Lancers’ squads were forced to sit out games because of rain and field conditions.

The last time that the Cordova baseball squad played was on March 20th in an SVC game at El Dorado. That’s where the Lancers left Placerville with a 6-4 win over the Cougars. Entering Wednesday’s conference road game at Rosemont, Cordova is 2-1 in the SVC and 3-5 overall.

Yesterday, Thursday, Cordova continued SVC action with a home game against Liberty Ranch. Today, Friday, the Lancers play another conference home contest against Rosemont.

As a team, Cordova has a .340 batting average. The Lancers have an on-base percentage at .434.

Leading the Lancers in different categories, starting with batting averages, is senior Logan Appino, who had an amazing .708 batting average. Behind Appino is junior Trevor Ready at .474, junior Jeremy Buck at .391, senior Zach Guererro at .333 and senior Spencer Gudgel at .292. Hovering around .300 is sophomore Nick Ravareau at .286 and seniors Jordan Meyers and Austin Smith at .250 each.

On the base paths, Appino leads in stolen bases at six and Buck and Guererro have two each. Guererro leads the Lancers in RBIs with nine, and Gudgel at eight.

Moving to the mound, Appino, along with Guererro and Smith, have a win each. Smith has struck out 12 batters to lead the team, followed by Appino at nine.

Yesterday, Thursday, Cordova played at Galt in an SVC contest. On Wednesday, the Lancers hosted defending conference champion Union Mine. On Tuesday, the Lancers entertained Rosemont.

Upcoming games after today for Cordova is next Tuesday when it welcomes Liberty Ranch, which is currently in first place with a 4-0 in the SVC and 10-1-1.

Next Thursday, the Lady Lancers play Union Mine again, this time at the Lady Diamondbacks’ field in El Dorado. One week from today, Friday, Cordova takes another break from conference play with a home meeting against Capital Christian.

All games, except for the Tokay contest, are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. The first pitch for today’s Tokay-Cordova contest is set for 4:15 p.m.
