Twice in a week, the Cordova High School baseball team was involved in a one-run game.

In Tuesday’s Sierra Valley Conference road game at Galt, the Lancers had good pitching and timely hitting that led to a 6-5 win over the Warriors. The win keeps Cordova at 5-5 in the SVC and 6-9-1 overall and still in the hunt for one of the conference’s three playoff berths.

“It looks like it will come down to who plays the best in the final five games,” said Cordova head coach Doug Hughes.

On the mound, the Lancers’ Jarrett Harris went the distance; he struck 10 Galt batters, allowed six hits and walked three.

At the plate, Logan Appino and Spencer Gudgel had two hits each. Appino also had an RBI.

Bear Creek 12, Cordova 3

In a non-conference road game in Stockton on April 16th, the Lancers had only three hits while the Bruins clubbed 11.

“We got beat by a very good Bear Creek team (12-5-1),” Hughes said. “The Bruins hit just about everything we threw up there. Like I told my players after the game, all loses are disappointing but playing good teams like Bear Creek are only going to make us better in the long run.”

Cordova 3, El Dorado 2

The other one-run game took place at the Lancers’ field on April 14th.

The game was in the Lancers’ favor, 3-1, going into the top of the sixth inning. The visiting Cougars scored a run but Cordova hung on for the victory.

And pitching was also a factor as well. The Lancers’ Austin Smith also went the distance, striking out three Cougar batters, walked none and gave up only three hits.

Buck and Appino had two hits each in the game. One of Buck’s hits was a double, which plated Appino in the bottom of the third inning.

Yesterday, Thursday, Cordova hosted Galt to complete their home-and-home series.

Next Tuesday, the Lancers host Liberty Ranch. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
