On Tuesday evening, the Cordova High School volleyball team picked up its first official win in a preseason home match against Valley.
Inside Lancers Gym, the Lady Lancers swept the Lady Vikings 3-0. Final scores were not available at press time.
For the season, Cordova is 1-1. In the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Foundation match on Aug. 29th, the Lancers won, unofficially, over Casa Roble in four games; final scores were 25-22, 26-24, 24-26, 27-25.
“The game against Casa Robles was very good,” said Cordova head coach Shavonna Andrews. “We pulled the game off with better communication and our passing in serve-receive.”
This season, Andrews has five seniors returning from last season; Gianna Bell, Adrienne Hammond, Rosaline Meyer, Lexi Samayoa and Kelsie Graf.
“I think I have a talented group of ladies,” said Andrews of her returning players. “I feel that if they believe they can do great things, they will.”
More returning players on the squad are juniors Shaieve Clore, who has been playing varsity volleyball since her freshman year. Other juniors who played last season as sophomores are Elizabeth Luis, Yelena Melnik, Yesfir Oliferchik, Diana Ramirez and Katrina Vang.
“We have a lot to build on this year,” Andrews said. “With the energy, I know we are capable of bringing, we can do some great things.”
That includes the Lady Lancers eyeing a Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berth.
“I would love to make playoffs this season and shock our school and the league by coming in the top three,” Andrews said.
On Wednesday, Cordova played at West Campus. Today, Friday, the Lady Lancers host Sacramento at 6 p.m.
