A quick start led to the Cordova High School boys soccer team winning two non-conference games last week.
At Capital Christian High, the Lancers posted a 5-0 win over the host Cougars on Dec. 9th. The victory gives Cordova a 2-3-1 record.
Cordova jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Antonio Ortega scored the Lancers’ first goal on a penalty kick. Then moments later, Lancer teammate Erick Hernandez set up the team’s next score, as he had a run to the box that drew a hand ball call in the penalty area by a Capital Christian’s player. Drawing another penalty kick, the Lancers were successful again off Hernandez’s foot for a 2-0 lead.
“The offense continued to pick things up (in the second half),” said Cordova head coach Eric Mc Cahon.
In the final 40 minutes of the game, Hernandez scored again, with an assist from Ortega. Hernandez finished with a hat trick for the Lancers, scoring his third goal, with an assist from Oscar Natalio for a 4-0 lead.
Bernardo Valdez scored the Lancers’ final goal on a shot from distance from just outside the box.
Cordova 2, Del Campo 0
Hosting a non-conference home game on Dec. 8th, the Lancers scored a goal each in the first and second halves.
“In the Del Campo match, the team really stepped up its communication, which was key in speeding up our defensive transitions,” Mc Cahon said.
Eugine Kharamtsova had a goal, from distance coming out of his center midfield position for one of the Lancers’ goals. Sultan Folorunsho's goal late in the second half sealed the victory.
Today, Friday, and Saturday, the Lancers will compete at the Del Campo Tournament.
