Five games in five days.
That’s what the Cordova High School boys basketball team endured last week. Four of those games were in Stockton, as the Lancers played in the McDonald’s Classic, which was played at Edison High School and Weston Ranch High School.
Last Saturday, Cordova (3-5) closed out the tourney with a 71-54 loss to Weston Ranch. The Cougars jumped out to a 23-17 lead in the first quarter. Then in the second quarter, the Lancers and Cougars relied on defense, which led to both teams combining for 15 points. Weston Ranch, however, still led 31-24 at halftime.
“They shot the ball very well,” said Cordova head coach Fletcher Johnson of the Cougars. “Seems like the teams that we were playing against were shooting way above average against us. They have two, three people that just don’t miss.”
Leading scorers for the Lancers, who went 1-3 at the tourney, were point guard Joe Danielyan with 12 points, and Tyreke Tate and Calvin Augusta eight points each.
The day before tournament action got underway in Stockton, the Lancers beat Rocklin 65-63 on a last second shot. The game story was in last week’s issue.
“Five tough games in five days,” Johnson said.
Here are results of the Lancers’ games at the tournament.
Grant 81, Cordova 40
Buchanan 88, Cordova 84
In its second game of the tourney, Cordova and Buchanan of Clovis were tied at 44-44 at halftime.
But in the second half, Buchanan got off to a jump start on the Lancers with a 24-19 advantage. Cordova outscored its opponent, 21-20, in the final quarter, but fell just short of the win.
Two Cordova players scored nearly 30 points each in the game. Guard Markell Briggs finished with 28 points and Augusta 27. Lancer guard Jason Novik also scored in double figures for the Lancers, with 11 points.
Cordova 77, Edison 67
In the tourney opener on Dec. 7th, the Lancers trailed 57-53 going into the fourth quarter. But the Vikings’ lead was quickly wiped away by Cordova, which outscored Edison 24-10 for the win.
Novik was the Lancers’ leading scorer with 26 points, followed by LeAndre Ward at 15. Augusta and Mike Brown had nine points each.
Yesterday, Friday, Cordova continued tournament action at the 27th annual Holiday Classic, hosted by the Tracy and West High boys basketball programs. The Lancers played West in the tourney opener. The tournament will conclude tomorrow, Saturday.
Cordova is idle until Wednesday, Dec. 28th, when it opens the 41st annual Cordova Christmas Classic.
