The Cordova High wrestling team finished the 2016-17 Sierra Valley Conference with seven members placing at the Divisional Tournament that qualified them to compete at the Masters Tournament.
For the boys at the Divisional Tournament, Freshman, Bryson Coleman took 4th Place in the 106-pound weight class, Senior Zachary Guerrero took 2nd in the 113-pound weight class, Senior Derrick Burton took 4th in the 132-pound class and Senior Deante McCullough finished 1st in the 152-pound class. All four boys competed in the Masters Tournament but none advanced to the State Tournament.
The Lancers had five girl wrestlers qualify for the Divisional Tournament with three of them advancing to the Masters Tournament. At the Regional Tournament, Sophomore Makayla Bailey took 6th in the 111-pound weight class, Freshmen Atziry Chavez finished 8th in the 137-pound weight class and Junior Alexis Cuevas took 2nd place in the 133-pound class. Alexis was the only Cordova wrestler to advance to the State Tournament after finishing 3rd in the Masters Tournament. She wrestled both days where she won two and lost two, just missing the placing round by one match.
Varsity Coach Marco Garcia was real proud at the way his wrestlers performed all year and looks forward to more success in the 2017-18 season. Congratulations to all the Cordova wrestlers and coaching staff for an outstanding year of competition.
