Long Distance Runners Shine for Cordova Track and Field

In its first Sierra Valley Conference dual meet of the season, the Cordova High School track and field teams found individual success against Rosemont.

In the varsity boys’ events, Johnny Garcia was a double winner in the 800 and 1600 meter races. Garcia, a senior, took the 800 at 2 minutes, 17.84 seconds, which was a personal best. He was clocked at 5:02.59 in the 1600.

Another Lancer taking first place was junior Adam Holman in the 110 hurdles at 17.38 seconds. The 4x400 relay team also won at 3:33.56.

For the varsity girls, Citlalli Chavez also had a personal best in the 3200 meters at 14:07.12, which earned her a first-place finish. Trinity Foster, a sophomore, also won in the 100 meters at 17.89 seconds.

Cordova head coach Shane Jackson noted lots of improvement by Chavez and Garcia in the long distant events.

“They fought all race and came out victorious in their races,” Jackson said. “Johnny has put in a great amount of work and training miles to have the strength to chase down his opponent coming from 20 meters behind with a lap to go to win the race.”

The Lady Lancers’ 4x400 relay team of won the event at 4:35.10. Members of that winning team were senior Bri Anna Samuel, junior Carla Donis and freshmen Gabriella Maduri and Blessings Norwood.

In team scores, Rosemont beat Cordova boys 96-40. The Lady Wolverines also produced a 91-41 victory over the Lady Lancers. The Cordova frosh/soph boys squad pulled out a 69-37 win.

On Wednesday, Cordova hosted its first SVC dual meet of the season against Liberty Ranch. Then next Wednesday, April 5th, Cordova competes in another SVC dual meet at El Dorado.
