Wrestling: Mitchell Marauders Win the League Championship

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The Mitchell Middle School wrestling team dominated the 2020 Twin Rivers Athletic League (TRAL) wrestling team championship tournament. The TRAL final tournament which includes over 100 competitors from Mills Middle School, Capital Christian School, Bradshaw Christian School, and Natomas Charter School, was hosted at Mitchell Middle School on Thursday February 6th. The TRAL wrestling championship tournament is the culmination of the regular wrestling season which began in November and pits the league’s best wrestlers against one another in their respective weight classes.
Marauder wrestlers who stood out in their weight classes included First Place finishers Drake Garner (112), Diego Cisneros (128), and Tonga Funaki (235); Second Place finishers Maddox Tran (70), Nate Zilles (76), Niko Bazan (89), Angel Guzman (100), Sophia Zermeno (108), Van Merrill (116), Aaliyha Luna (122), and Gregory Rubio (128), Roman Panasyuk (135), Sophia Kurtz (142), Kenyon Owens (153), William Wallace (168), and Alana Thompson (205); Third Place finishers Emma Smiley (112), Dajey Valdez (116), and Jacob Klapper (128). “I’m very proud of all our wrestlers today. They worked so hard all season and put it all together tonight against some tough competition,” said Coach Joe Zilles.
Overall the Marauder wrestlers outscored their opponents with 57 points, Natomas Charter 50, Bradshaw Christian 38, and Mills 16. Capital Christian did not compete. Next up for a select few Marauder wrestlers is the Area Finals tournament being held at Folsom Middle School on February 15th.
