RCPP Expands Program to Send Local Veterans to College

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Meet Lindsay Almberg, a single parent with two children living in the City of Rancho Cordova. She served our country in the U.S. Army for 14 ½ years before being medically retired and is a 100 percent disabled veteran.

While in the military, Almberg started her degree program in criminal justice. Due to health issues related to her service, she was facing starting over with a new career path.

Almberg received an email about the Rancho Cordova Promise Program, a partnership between the City of Rancho Cordova and Folsom Lake College, expanding to support local veterans.

“I’m a single parent with a new mortgage but decided to take a leap of faith,” said Almberg. “I quit my job and went back to school full time, and thankfully am able to do that because of the Rancho Cordova Promise Program.”

The first-in-the-region Promise Program began in 2016 in the City of Rancho Cordova. More than 370 graduating high school seniors in Rancho Cordova have participated in the program, which provides eligible students with funding that can be applied toward tuition and fees, textbooks, transportation, or other expenses. Funding for this program is provided by the city through a Community Enhancement Fund grant.

New during the 2020-2021 school year, the city and Folsom Lake College expanded the Rancho Cordova Promise Program to eligible Rancho Cordova veterans. Ten veterans are currently participating in the program.

“Rancho Cordova is a vibrant community that values its strong military history and the many veterans who choose to call it home,” said Rancho Cordova Mayor David Sander, Ph.D. “The City of Rancho Cordova is proud to thank our veterans for their service and recognize the sacrifices they’ve made by ensuring they have greater access to higher education through the Rancho Cordova Promise Program. By sending students and now veterans to college, we help create a well-educated workforce that advances our local economy.”

Enrollment for the spring 2021 semester begins on November 23rd. For more information about the Rancho Cordova Promise Program, visit flc.losrios.edu.
