RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The Cordova High School boy’s golf team finished their season earlier this month with junior Stephen Nefsky reaching the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Boy’s Golf Masters Tournament.

In his third year in the program, Nefsky shot a 77 at the Section Maters and took away many positives from the event held at Elkhorn Golf Club in Stockton on May 16.

“It was definitely a fun experience. My coach (Scott Freeborn) and I went down the Thursday before to play our practice round and scout out the course,” Nefsky said. “Just going down there was a really good experience. I had a lot of fun. I didn’t play well enough to advance, but it's just motivation to do better next year.”

The individual showing form Nefsky capped an exciting season for the Lancers, which included the team having a higher number of players than last season and playing host to the SJS Division IV Championship at Mather Golf Course on May 9.

“It was really fun. It didn’t even really feel like we were playing golf. It was more just hanging out with friends and golf was just secondary,” Nefsky said. “Everyone just went out every day to have fun.”

Nefsky’s goal for this year was to be a scratch golfer by the end of this summer. He currently sits at a 0.6 handicap and is looking to play in non-school tournaments in the future.

“I’ve been coaching kids most of my adult life. I’ve had the good fortune of coaching tons of great kids, but I can count on one hand the number of times that a kid was the real deal. Stephen is the real deal,” Freeborn said. “The only thing that will limit how far he goes with golf will be himself. He works harder at his craft than any kid I’ve ever coached. I’m truly lucky to coach a young man like Stephen. I’m looking forward to seeing how far he goes.”
