RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Rancho Cordova hosted its inaugural Cicladova on Saturday, Oct. 12, transforming Coloma Road from McGregor Drive to Cordova Lane into a car-free zone from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The street welcomed more than 400 participants, including cyclists, skaters, and pedestrians, filled with community spirit.

Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, such as yoga, dancing, a bicycle cruise slow roll, food trucks, a craft beer garden, bike repairs, and spin art, plus a ride to the event with an arborist.

Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA) hosted the event in partnership with Bicycling Advocates Rancho Cordova (BARC) with support from the City’s Community Enhancement and Investment Fund. The event draws inspiration from Bogota, Colombia’s Ciclovia, where streets are similarly closed to cars for community enjoyment.

“A new idea was born, how to use your streets for something besides just getting from point A to point B,” said Debora Banks, executive director from Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates, at the Oct. 7 Rancho Cordova City Council meeting. “We believe that while cars are really important, they are not the end all be-all and we would like to see our streets be used for other things and so we decided that we would see if we could create a Cicladova.”

The term “Cicladova” merges “cicla,” meaning cycling, with “Dova,” derived from Rancho Cordova, creating a playful name that reflects the events focus on cycling and community engagement.
