Lady Lancers' Second-Half Rally Fuels OT Win
Dec 10, 2024 06:44PM ● By James DarnellRANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Lady Lancers put together a comeback for the ages on Friday, Dec. 6 against visiting Destiny Christian Academy, coming away with an exciting 49-46 overtime victory inside the Lancer gym.
Trailing by 20 points midway through the third quarter after struggling in the first half, the Lady Lancers (2-2 overall) began to climb back into the contest with an 11-4 run to end the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Cordova sophomore forward Becca Lee would score nine of her 11 points, including a game-tying layup with 40 seconds remaining to help send the game into overtime.
The Lady Lancers had all the momentum, and with nine seconds remaining in overtime, Cordova junior guard Taliyah Johnson sank a game-winning three-pointer from the right corner to seal the deal for the Lady Lancers. Johnson, who led Cordova with 15 points, was all smiles after the game.
"It felt amazing," Johnson said of hitting the big shot. "It felt good. I feel like I'm on top of the world."
For Lady Lancers head coach Kim Little, seeing her team claw their way back into the game after a lackluster first half was gratifying. "We came out flat in the first half, actually into the third quarter," she said. "But things finally clicked and that fight turned on."
For Destiny Christian Academy (2-2 overall), junior guard Aaliyah Wilcox paced her team with 15 points. Junior guard Jasmine Ferrell added 12 points for Cordova prior to exiting with an ankle injury in the second half.
After dropping the first two games of their season, the Lady Lancers have won their last two games as of Dec. 6. According to Little, a scrappy, gritty victory was just what her team needed to hopefully kick things into gear. "I think it is what we've been wanting," she said. "It's what we've been believing we can do."
Cordova will next take to the court on Monday, Dec. 9 at Burbank, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. (after press time)
