RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Lancers completed a sweep of the Metro League baseball season series against the Grant Pacers with a 6-1 victory at home on Friday, March 28.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runners on base and no outs, the Pacers elected to intentionally walk Lancers' junior designated hitter Alfonso Maya, setting up a bases loaded situation that turned out to be the deciding factor in the contest.

Sophomore Gabriel Bargas connected on an RBI-single to left field, allowing fellow sophomore Bro Ahlstrom to score the go-ahead run from third base and the flood gates opened from there.

Cordova scored four more runs in the inning, including a two-RBI single to right field from Lancers' junior standout Levi Nyberg, which ultimately put the game out of reach.

The Lancers (8-5-1 overall, 4-2 Metro League) were led by Nyberg, whose two hits and two RBIs led the team offensively. Freshman Nate Jones and sophomore Noah Oxley also recorded two hits apiece in a solid all-around offensive output.

On the mound, sophomore Gage Cordova only allowed one run while racking up six strikeouts in four innings pitched. In relief efforts, Jones tallied an impressive five strikeouts and gave up only one hit in three innings.

The victory came on the heels of a 14-3 win at Grant two days prior, and at press time, Cordova has won five of their past six games with the team now fully entrenched in league play.

Head coach Scott Ahlstrom, who admittedly has high expectations for his team, wasn't quick to overstate his teams' recent success.

"I'm happy," Ahlstrom said. "At the end of the day, we came out and beat a team that we should beat twice."

On April 9, the Lancers are scheduled to travel to Roseville to battle West Park to begin their season series with the Panthers. West Park currently holds the second-place spot in the Metro League standings while being only one game ahead of Cordova in league record at press time. Cordova will then host West Park on April 11 at Peterson Field with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. in what figures to be a big-time ballgame.
