RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - For three days each May, the sea meets the streets in a celebration of all things mermaid.
The California Mermaid Convention, the longest-running event of its kind on the West Coast, has become an aquatic oasis for merfolk of all kinds, ranging from professional performers to everyday fans and this year’s convention was nothing short of spectacular.

Family-friendly events included mermaid-themed entertainment, a ukulele sing-along and educational talks about ocean ecology and reef restoration.
Held from May 16 to May 18, the event attracted about 300 participants, all eager to dive into a weekend filled with swimming, networking and, of course, sparkling tails. Known for its inclusive and joyful atmosphere, the convention serves as both a community gathering and an educational platform.
“We want everyone to feel like they belong,” said Ashley Rastad, founder of Pixie Tribe Entertainment, which has partnered with Mermaid & Mom to make the event possible. “The merfolk community is diverse, whether you're a professional performer, a fan, or just someone looking to experience the magic of being a mermaid.”

The Cordova Community Pool hosted the main convention from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18.
The California Mermaid Convention, formerly known as Mermaid Weekend, has been a staple of the Northern California scene for more than a decade. Since its inception, it has expanded significantly, growing from a small gathering into a full-fledged convention. In 2018, the event outgrew its previous venues and evolved into the larger, more inclusive experience it is today, thanks in large part to the collaboration between Mermaid & Mom and Pixie Tribe Entertainment.
This year's convention boasted a jam-packed schedule, with events for all ages. Highlights included group swims in tail, a costumed ball, under water performances and photo workshops, and a series of panels featuring professional mermaids, ocean conservationists and underwater photographers.
The festivities kicked off with a Launch Party at the Dive Bar in Sacramento, where attendees were treated to a special show by the Dive Bar Mermaids, who swim nightly in a 40-foot saltwater aquarium. Another signature event, the Promenade of Mermaids, was from 4 to 7 p.m. May 16 in historic Old Town Sacramento. The parade was open to the public and offered a fun glimpse into the magical world of merfolk. The Bubble Ball, an underwater themed extravaganza, took place from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at Hagan Park Community Center and featured dance music, photo opportunities, refreshments and special performances.

Face painting was also available at the Cordova Community Pool for the California Mermaid Convention on May 17 and May 18.
For younger attendees, the Cordova Community Pool hosted the main convention from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18. Family-friendly events included mermaid-themed entertainment, a ukulele sing-along and educational talks about ocean ecology and reef restoration. Environmental stewardship was also a key focus this year, with presentations on topics such as garbage island and the impact of plastic waste on marine life.
A key part of the convention’s ethos is giving back to the local community. This year, the event partnered with the American River Parkway Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of the American River Parkway.
The California Mermaid Convention also partnered with Visit Rancho Cordova for the fourth year. Through this collaboration, they secured hotel blocks at Hilton Homewood Suites, offering convenient accommodations for out-of-town guests. All attendees who booked their stay though the room block were also entered into a photoshoot giveaway with photographer Brett Stanley.

The merfolk community is diverse, whether you're a professional performer, a fan or just someone looking to experience the magic of being a mermaid.
“We love our mermaids. This is such a fun, quirky and positive event. They really bring something nobody has,” said Visit Rancho Cordova brand communication strategist Kristen Achziger. “Visit Rancho Cordova loves partnering with events like this because they bring our community together and bring pride to our hometown. It offers an ability for travelers and visitors to plug in to our community.”
