Freshman Named to All-Metro Team
Jun 10, 2025 04:57PM ● By James DarnellRANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Cordova Lancers’ freshman tennis standout Perry Mayer was recently named to the 2025 All-Metro League team for the spring season.
As a team, the Lancers finished the year 2-10 overall, but within individual play, Mayer was certainly a bright spot. Mayer, who began the season as the teams' No. 2 player, was thrusted into the No. 1 spot after an injury within the Lancers’ lineup and was able to end the season as the Lancers’ top singles player.
Mayer competed in 11 of the teams’ 12 games on the year, finishing with an impressive 5-1 record in No. 2 singles play, and a 3-2 mark in No. 1 singles matches. His play stood out to Lancer’s head coach Jeff Pieczynski, who liked what he saw from the youngster.
“I’m really proud of what he accomplished coming in as a freshman,” Pieczynski said. “He really stepped up and I was very impressed.”
This season was Mayer’s first taste of team tennis; however he has been playing the sport for some time with his father, who is an avid player according to Pieczynski. He also mentioned Mayer’s coachability being one of his top traits, being that sometimes talented players aren’t necessarily willing to be coached up if they feel overly confident in their skills. Pieczynski is looking forward to coaching Mayer next season and beyond as he continues to develop on the court.
“I definitely think he’ll have some real good opportunities to advance from the success that he had this year,” Pieczynski said. “He can draw from that to help him prepare for next year. I expect him to build on what he did this year.”
Piecyznski also mentioned he is looking forward to training Mayer this offseason and believes that additional matches in local UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) tournaments will also go a long way in helping Mayer improve going into the next school year.
