RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - All six Cordova Girls Softball, Fury All Star teams, competed in the 27th annual Stars of Cordova Fastpitch Tournament at the Mills Middle School Softball Complex.

The Stars of Cordova Fastpitch Tournament started in 1999 as a local girls’ fastpitch tournament and has grown to be one of the best in Northern California with 72 teams competing this year.

Over the course of the two weekends, from May 30 to June 6, the girls played 175 games. The teams compete by age group on All Star teams for their recreational league.

Leagues represented were from Rocklin, Roseville, Lincoln, Loomis, Elk Grove, Davis, Shingle Springs, Woodland, Folsom and others. The league that accumulates the most points from games played in pool play and championship brackets are declared winners.

Cordova Girls Softball bested the Rocklin league by two points, 137 to 135, to claim the coveted “Star of Cordova” perpetual trophy.

After the first day, Rocklin, Loomis and Cordova were all tied. Each of the six Cordova teams played a crucial role in securing the victory, with every win contributing valuable points. A single loss could have cost them the title.

The competition came down to the final championship games, where both Rocklin and Cordova had two teams competing for the crown.

That’s when the magic happened. The Cordova 10U C team faced off against Rocklin, knowing that for a chance, they had to win. Down by two runs, Cordova had their last at-bats. They scored one, cutting the lead to one, with runners on second and third, two outs and two strikes on the batter.

Then the magic unfolded. A blooper soared over third base, scoring one run and tying the game. As the runner from second rounded third, a play at the plate ensued. The runner slid, was safe and Cordova won.

But the story didn’t end there. Nevada County had to beat Rocklin and they did.

Writing this article as the Cordova Girls Softball president, I am very proud to be associated with the families and players who make the magic happen.
