RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Led by legendary head coach Guy Anderson, the 1981 Cordova Lancers varsity baseball team is known for being one of the best groups in school history.

With a roster of future Major Leaguers, the group is held in high regard for all that they accomplished during that special season. All these years later, the team is receiving yet another award as they were selected for induction into the Rancho Cordova Sports Hall of Fame.

Led by All-City Metro Player of The Year pitcher Mike Dolan, the '81 Lancers steamrolled through their competition en route to a stellar 28-8 record, including Metro League and AAA Section titles. The group was also ranked No. 1 in California at the time and its pitching staff had a combined 2.02 ERA (Earned Run Average).

Dolan's 10-3 record on the mound as a senior included a 2.16 ERA, with the standout also throwing a no-hitter that season against Del Campo in the Tournament of Champions, where he was named Most Valuable Player. Dolan was also inducted last year into the Sports Hall of Fame.

Additionally, seven players from the team went on to be drafted by MLB clubs, with some being drafted on multiple occasions.

Tony Faryniarz was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 16th round of the 1982 MLB Draft, the Minnesota Twins in the first round in 1985, the San Diego Padres in the first round in 1985 and the Chicago Cubs in the first round in 1986.

Chris Bosio, who was the only player on the team to be drafted following his senior high school season, was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 29th round of the 1981 draft, as well as in the second round of the 1982 draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Kevin Atwood went in the 23rd round of the 1982 draft to the Cubs. Jim Massey was selected in the fourth round by the Atlanta Braves in 1984, with teammate Doug Armstrong also going in 1984 when he was taken by the New York Yankees in the seventh round.

Jeff Yurtin was drafted twice, first being in the 10th round of the 1984 draft by the Cubs, then again in the 12th round of the 1986 draft by the Padres.

Finally, Pat Sullivan was selected in the third round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1983, then again by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 31st round in 1985.

The Cordova Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at Rancho Cordova City Hall, 2729 Prospect Park Drive. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at https://form.jotform.com/cordovacouncil/rcaa-reception-tickets-2025.
