RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Lady Lancers varsity girls golf team has seen marked improvement since the beginning of the season, according to head coach Brian Botsford.

With the regular season wrapping up on Oct. 13 at the final Metro League match of the year at River Oaks Golf Course in Nicolaus, CA, the Lady Lancers as a team will be missing out on the California Interscholastic Federation Sectionals.

At press time, the Lady Lancers held a 4-6 overall record heading into Monday's match and were in fourth place within the Metro League, and the CIF only advances the top two seeded teams for postseason play. That aside, Botsford is pleased with what he's seen from his group since the beginning of the season.

"Overall, it's just been great," Botsford said. "We go out four days a week, and I keep that schedule. They've responded to it really well. At the beginning of the season we had some kids scoring in the 80s. Now, everybody's scoring 70. So, there's improvements that have gone on, and they're just a great bunch of gals."

Seniors Grace Deems, Peyton Stalker, and Savannah Buckner have all played well this season, along with sophomores Anna Vysotska and Avery Arnold. Freshmen Lacey Boswell and Eva Adair putting together solid outings as well in their first year on the team.

Deems in particular has stood out, as she entered last Monday's Metro League finale with a shot at advancing to Sectionals. Final results were not available at press time. Her coach has been pleased with the improved play from the senior.

"The way that I gauge it, last year when she was a junior she would shoot in the high-60s," Botsford said of Deems. "Now she's shooting low 50s, 53, 54. She has bettered herself by almost 12-15 shots."

In addition to the players, Botsford has also been pleased with the addition of volunteer assistant coach Ryan Harris. Harris, who joined Botsford in coaching the boys golf team last spring towards the tail end of the year, has been a very welcomed addition to the girls program as well this fall, and deserves a ton of credit.
