RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - After a successful outing in their final Metro League match of the year, the Cordova Lady Lancers are sending two of their own to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac Joaquin Section Division II Divisional tournament on Oct. 27 at Turkey Creek Golf Course in Lincoln, CA.
In the Metro League finale on Oct. 13 at River Oaks Golf Course in Nicolaus, CA, the conditions were less than ideal as rain and wind hampered play all around. Even so, Lady Lancers seniors Grace Deems and Savannah Buckner put together solid efforts. Buckner shot a 121, with Deems shooting 127 to ultimately give the pair two of the six individual spots allotted within the Metro League for the upcoming Divisional tournament. Cordova head coach Brian Botsford was happy with the outcome.
"River Oaks is a challenging course," Botsford said. "You have to have some really good and focused tee shots. I think they held their own."
As a team the Lady Lancers finished in fourth place within the Metro League this fall, meaning that they would not be advancing as a group as only the top two teams move on. However, the next top six individuals within league are selected, allowing Deems and Buckner to continue their strong senior seasons. As a whole, the entire Lady Lancers varsity girls golf team was rooting on their upperclassmen teammates.
"When you're sitting there knowing that your team took fourth place, all the team was very excited for the two. That's the type of team that we have," Botsford said. "They kind of knew going in that Grace (Deems) had a pretty good chance going in, and they were really pleasantly surprised when Savannah (Buckner) got in there and was able to be included."
Moving on to Turkey Creek together is special for the two seniors, who have known each other since kindergarten according to Botsford. The pair are excited to compete together at least once more during high school, and Botsford would like to see the duo score well.
"If they can go in there and create their own personal records, I'd be very, very pleased with the two of them," he said.
