RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Four Cordova Lancers earned All-Metro League honors during the winter varsity soccer season, the first under new head coach Luis Aguilar.

Three juniors - Defenseman Matteo Ravelo, striker Shazad Hazem, and midfielder Misael Ceja Rosas, along with sophomore midfielder Raul Aguilar Vigil all earned individual awards and recognition based on their stellar play on the pitch this winter. Hazem’s 12 goals ranked second in the Metro League, with Aguilar Vigil ranking third in assists over the course of the season with nine. Ravelo is being recognized for his sticky defensive presence, and Cejas Rojas was a solid all-around performer for a young Lancers team that appears to be headed in the right direction.

Each athlete is also being lauded for their performance in the classroom, with Ravelo standing out academically with an astounding 4.3 grade point average. Aguilar is proud of his young student athletes and is excited to have them all back next season to provide the example of what he wants to see from his entire team.

“It’s really encouraging because now I saw firsthand what I have to work with,” Aguilar said. “Hopefully it shows the other guys on the team that is what it takes. Whether it’s in the summer, with their club, off the field, it gives them a direct point of reference. They see their teammates who are getting recognition in the classroom, the weight room and on the field. I’m going to use them to mirror what I want everyone else to look like.”

The Lancers won three of their final four games within league play to end the season, and although they did not advance to the postseason the future is clearly bright for the program.
