RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Sunny skies and spirited cheers welcomed the Cordova Girls Softball League (CGSL) back to the field on Saturday, March 21, as the league celebrated its 61st Opening Day at the Mills Middle School Softball Complex, 10439 Coloma Rd, Rancho Cordova.

The day kicked off with a 9 a.m. parade led by T-ball players displaying their team banners, a tradition that highlights the league’s emphasis on fun and community. Snack bars opened at 7 a.m., featuring a special treat from league President Rod Borba: his signature tri-tip sandwiches, alongside chicken sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, candy, snacks and drinks.

Games started at 11:30 a.m. and ran through 4 p.m., showcasing friendly competition across all age groups. The 6U division featured Bumble Bees vs. Lady Bugs, Lil Angels vs. Lil Wolves, Butterflies vs. Tinkerbells, and Lucky Ladies vs. Lil Princesses. The 8U squads included Angels vs. Lady Ballers, A’s vs. Wildcats, Sidewinders vs. Lady Tigers, and Diamonds vs. Marines. In the 10U division, Storms faced Fever, and Blaze took on Dirt Devils. For 12U and Majors, action heated up with Crush vs. RC Magic, Fire & Ice vs. RC Magic, Xplosion vs. Chaos, and Thunder vs. Inferno representing Cordova Varsity.

“This was our 61st Opening Day, and the weather couldn’t have been better,” Borba said. “Watching the teams share their enthusiasm and pride for the season was the highlight of my day.”

This year, CGSL set a participation record with 27 teams and roughly 300 players, ranging in age from 4 to 16. Borba said his favorite moments were seeing the youngest T-ball players lead the parade in costumes and celebrating girls who excelled in the league’s candy sale fundraiser.

“I took great enjoyment watching these young girls show their pride in that accomplishment,” Borba said.

The league’s mission goes beyond the scoreboard.

“Team sports like softball build relationships among players and parents,” Borba explained. “Most importantly, we want the girls to learn the sport and have fun.”

Looking ahead, Borba is excited about both the growth of the league and the competitive success of its teams. Several squads, including the Cordova Fury, will be vying for spots in national tournaments.

Fundraising efforts are also making an impact. The league’s candy sale brought in $20,000, helping keep registration costs low.

“In my 27 years with the league, we’ve only raised registration fees three times,” Borba said. “It was also a fantastic day at the snack bar.”

Measure H funding from the City of Rancho Cordova has added another layer of support, helping the league install new wayfinding signage around the complex.

From parades to prizes, tri-tip to tournaments, Bumble Bees to Cordova Fury, this Opening Day set the tone for a season of community, competition and celebration of girls’ sports in Rancho Cordova.
