RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Rancho Cordova will host more than 1,200 cyclists and spectators May 1–3 as the Golden State Race Series returns for its 21st year, bringing three days of competitive racing to the region.

Organized by Rio Strada Racing in partnership with Visit Rancho Cordova, the annual event has become a staple of Northern California’s cycling calendar, drawing riders from across the state and beyond. The series includes a Friday time trial, a Saturday criterium and a Sunday circuit race, with courses set throughout Rancho Cordova.

Races are open to a wide range of competitors, from junior riders as young as 10 to master’s and elite athletes. Organizers say the event regularly attracts top-tier talent, including state, national and world champions.

“The Golden State Race Series represents more than just competition, it is a celebration of community, athletic excellence and the continued growth of cycling in our region,” said Ron Rouse, president of Rio Strada Racing. “We are excited to once again welcome athletes and spectators for an unforgettable weekend of racing. This year, a portion of event proceeds will be donated in support of junior racers participating in the event.”

The event has earned multiple “Best Race in Northern California/Nevada” honors and is the only California stop included in both the USA Cycling Juniors Cup and Masters Cup series. The 2026 races will also be part of the NCNCA Women’s Series.

Competition begins on Friday with a 6-mile time trial on Rod Beaudry Drive. The race follows a Merckx-style format, meaning standard road bikes are required and time trial-specific equipment is not allowed. Registration for the time trial is available by pre-registration only. Saturday’s criterium and Sunday’s circuit race will start and finish near Cobblerock Drive, featuring laps of approximately 0.9 miles for the criterium and 2.3 miles for the circuit course.

Same-day registration for those races opens at 7 a.m. and closes 15 minutes before each event. Registration fees are $55 per race for most categories. Junior riders ages 10–14 pay $25, while those ages 15–18 pay $40. A $15 day-of-race surcharge applies to onsite registration, with a reduced $10 fee for juniors.

A USA Cycling license is required to compete, though one-day licenses will be available for novice riders. Organizers said cash prizes will be awarded in categories that meet minimum participation thresholds. A free kids race for ages 9 and under is also planned, with helmets and parental waivers required.

Rio Strada Racing, founded in 1982, is one of California’s longest-running cycling teams and produces several USA Cycling-sanctioned events. The organization received a proclamation from the city of Rancho Cordova in 2012 recognizing its contributions to competitive cycling and community health.

Spectators can attend the races throughout the weekend.
