RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Lancers knew this season would bring on growing pains.

Entering this spring, the Lancers had a much younger team compared to last season with several underclassmen stepping into key roles. Led by head coach Joseph Smith, this year was all about development and trying to be competitive within the Metro League. The Lancers entered the final two games of their schedule this week with a 6-16 overall record, including a 2-6 mark in league play, but there is certainly reason for optimism as they close out the year and look ahead.

The Lancers dropped their season series with Grant following a 3-0 (18-25, 23-25, 25-27) loss at home on Thursday, April 16, but it wasn't for lack of effort. The final two sets came down to the wire, but the Pacers (17-13 overall, 4-4 Metro League) were able to close out and complete the season sweep. The loss dropped Cordova to fifth place within the Metro League, and three games out from the third and final playoff spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II postseason allotted to the top three teams within league.

Despite being eliminated from playoff contention, the season should not be considered a failure. The team has seen several youngsters gain experience and develop, which will bode well for the future of the program. Junior Ethan La has been a bright spot on the year, ranking in the top three statistically in multiple categories for Cordova. La ranks third in hitting percentage (.192), third in digs per set (1.1), second in serving aces (9), third in digs (40) and second in receptions (200). Additionally, sophomore setter Monbi Hobart has played well, ranking third in serving aces (8), second in digs (52) and first in assists (161).

The Lancers wrapped up their spring schedule this week with road games at Antelope and West Park, the top two teams within the Metro League. Final results of those matches were not available at press time. Although their season is ending before they would like, the team is in a good position to return next spring with a more experienced group ready to take the next step.
