NICOLAUS, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Lancers wrapped up their regular season with a fifth-place team finish at the final Metro League tournament of the year on Tuesday, April 28 at River Oaks Golf Course in Nicolaus, CA. The Lancers shot a match-high 476 as a team, trailing Antelope by just seven strokes for fourth place.

In their final league outing, the Lancers were led by sophomore Eli Cervantes who shot a team-best 79. Additionally, senior Mason Gibbons shot a solid score of 87, a nearly 20-shot improvement from a season ago. The Lancers finish the season with a 2-8 overall record, good for fifth place in Metro League standings.

Things may not have went according to plan as a team this spring for head coach Brian Botsford, however the Lancers will have had representation in postseason play this week as Cervantes qualified individually for the CIF Sac Joaquin Section Division II Divisional Tournament this past Tuesday, May 5 at Pheasant Run Golf Course in Chowchilla, CA. Final results were not available at press time.

Cervantes has been impressive throughout the season for the Lancers en route to All-Metro League honors. His coach has been more than impressed with the jump the youngster has made in his second season with the program.

“He loves golf,” Botsford said of Cervantes. “He lives and breathes golf. He’s a great student. He’s the type of kid that you can give him a tee time and he’ll go and play by himself even if nobody else shows up. He’s just a great kid who really happens to just love golf, and he’s gotten so much better.”

Botsford expressed confidence in the sophomore prior to the Divisional tournament this week, stating he believed Cervantes could score well if he plays the game like he has all season.

“If he can go down there and just relax and get into his game, I can see him get into the high 70s or low 80s,” Botsford said. “The course looks doable, and it’s kind of in his area where the driver is a big part of it.”

Results from the Divisional tournament will be reported next week.
