RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Cordova Lancers’ sophomore standout Perry Mayer was recently named to the 2026 All-Metro League team for the second year in a row, coming off a superb season as the No. 1 singles player in the Lancers’ lineup. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Mayer put together an impressive 8-2 record in league play this season, which was good for second place in singles competition within the Metro League. It is the second consecutive year Mayer has been named as an All-League performer after doing so during his freshman season last spring, further cementing him as one of the top singles players in the area despite being just a sophomore. Cordova head coach Jeff Pieczynski was thrilled with what he saw from the youngster.

“I was really pleased with the year he had,” Pieczynski said. “I knew there were going to be four or five top players in our league including him, so I was really interested to see how he was going to perform against those top players. I was really pleased with how he played throughout the season.”

Mayer fell just short of advancing to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac Joaquin Section Championship tournament this spring, but figures to be right back in the mix next year. Even if Mayer was disappointed in not competing for a Section singles championship, you would never know it according to his coach as he believes the top trait of the youngster is his ability to stay even-keeled.

“Perry (Mayer) is very strong mentally,” Pieczynski said. “You can watch him play a match and you don’t know if he won the point or lost the point unless you were watching and you saw the ball land in or out of play. If you look at his emotions, he’s not like a lot of players, that if they lose the point, they’ll get discouraged. His body language for the most part is always positive and he doesn’t seem to get flustered.”

Pieczynski has already been in discussions with Mayer about how he should approach the offseason and which areas of his game need improvement, but there is certainly excitement within the Lancers’ program about the kind of player he can develop into during his upcoming junior and senior seasons.

Mayer will likely participate in local UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) tournaments and continue to play on his own as he looks to take the next step towards competing for a Section championship in the spring of 2027. Pieczynski is looking forward to what’s to come.

“I’m very encouraged knowing that I’ve got him for two more years,” Pieczynski said. “I'm very interested in seeing how he's going to progress and see that come to fruition.”
