RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Nearly 200 Folsom Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD) students wrapped up a two-week summer arts program by performing "Madagascar – A Musical Adventure KIDS" during special productions held June 17 at Gold Ridge Elementary School and Rancho Cordova Elementary School.

The performances marked the conclusion of the district's annual Visual and Performing Arts, or VAPA, Camp, which is designed for students transitioning from elementary to middle school. The summer program provides incoming fifth- and sixth-grade students with opportunities to explore dance, drama, music and visual arts while working collaboratively with their peers.

According to the district, this year's camp enrolled nearly 200 students who had completed fourth or fifth grade in May.

New this year was a theater technology track, allowing students to gain experience behind the scenes by learning about set construction, costumes, lighting, sound and special effects in addition to onstage performance.

For its annual production, VAPA Camp selected "Madagascar – A Musical Adventure KIDS," licensed through Music Theatre International. The musical was chosen in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the original film, according to the district.

Each year, the district purchases a new musical for the camp, creating a growing collection of production materials that can later be borrowed by school drama clubs and theater programs throughout the district.
