RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Young people from across the Sacramento area will have an opportunity to explore career paths, learn practical skills and connect with community resources during the free Empower Rancho Workshop on Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Hagan Community Center.

The youth-led event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2197 Chase Drive and will feature hands-on activities and presentations focused on education, financial literacy, health and wellness. A networking lunch will follow the workshop.

Organizers said the event was created to make educational opportunities and community resources more accessible to young people, regardless of their backgrounds or ability to pay.

“We hope this workshop provides students with concrete tools and confidence to work towards their future,” said Event Organizer Esha Banerjee. “Bringing free, quality educational and wellness resources to Rancho Cordova is vital because every young person deserves equitable opportunities.”

Banerjee said the workshop is primarily geared toward middle and high school students who are beginning to explore higher education and possible career paths. However, the event is open to people of all ages, with several activities designed to be useful for families as well.

Participants will be able to take part in guided art, nutrition and self-care activities, emergency preparedness and first-aid stations. Attendees will also have the opportunity to assemble first-aid kits that they can take home.

The workshop will include a four-part speaker series covering health, creativity, finances and education.

Dr. Archana Maniar, an infectious disease physician and author, will present “Creativity as an Antidote to Burnout.” Sushama Chowdhury, founder of Arightco Inc., will discuss financial literacy, while Tracy Chatters of TLC Educational Consulting will speak about alternatives to University of California schools and finding college scholarships. The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District will also participate with a presentation on its Mobile Integrated Health Program.

The workshop is primarily funded through the City of Rancho Cordova’s Community Enhancement & Investment Fund, which provides funding for community programs and projects, including youth services. Organizers said SMUD and Costco have also contributed to the event.

A team of 15 volunteers and five community collaborators are involved in putting on the workshop.

Organizers plan to hold additional workshops in Rancho Cordova, with future topics to be determined based on participant feedback and the community partners available for each event.

Admission is free. Registration is not required, but organizers strongly recommend RSVPing so they can plan for food and activity supplies.
