RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Sacramento Neighborhood Housing Services (SNHS), a HUD-approved housing counseling agency and certified CDFI lender serving 13 counties across Northern and Central California, will host Dorothy Mae Good Deeds Day 2026 on Saturday, Sept. 12, in partnership with the City of Rancho Cordova.
Named for Dorothy Mae Richardson, founder of the Neighborhood Housing Services movement, the free annual event honors the 40-year mission she inspired by bringing volunteers directly to the homes of 30 Lincoln Village households. Volunteers will provide yard cleanup, landscaping, home maintenance kits, e-waste disposal and on-site dumpsters for residents looking to discard unwanted items, along with take-home family meals, at no cost to participating residents, homeowners and renters alike.
“Most housing programs require ownership as a condition of access,” said Lauretta Casimir-Mahoney, CEO and President of SNHS. “This year we are placing special emphasis on renters, who often see less support from those programs. People are community, and for 40 years we have shown up through housing education, down payment assistance and foreclosure prevention. This is simply the latest way we show up.”
The day includes volunteer-led home beautification beginning at 9 a.m., live entertainment, a kid zone with free children's activities, a food truck, community lunch provided by the City of Rancho Cordova and a closing certificate ceremony honoring every volunteer. SNHS welcomes volunteers of all ages, including high school and college students seeking community service hours and individuals looking for a meaningful way to give back.
