NICOLAUS, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Lady Lancers recently competed in the first Metro League tournament of the season at River Oaks Golf Course in Nicolaus on Tuesday, Sept. 22. 

The team sent two juniors to the event in Anna Vysotska and Avery Arnold, who put together solid outings as they represented Cordova against the rest of the rival schools within the Metro League. Vystoska shot a team-best 107, with Arnold just behind her at 118. Although West Park, McClatchy and Kennedy took the first, second and third place in the event from a team-wide aspect, the two Lady Lancers did well for themselves individually and that will serve them well when it comes time to qualify for postseason play. Cordova Head Coach Brian Botsford was pleased with their performances. 

"Anna and Avery really have come through," Botsford said of their performance. "They are the juniors and leaders of the team, and they really did well. Anna finished with a 107 and Avery got a 118. Last year you could've probably added 20 strokes to each of their games, so you can see the improvement that is going on."

At the end of the regular season, the top two overall teams in the Metro League will qualify their entire roster for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac Joaquin Sectionals postseason tournament. Although Cordova may not end up qualifying their whole team as they currently sit in fourth place in the standings with a 2-3 overall record at press time, they do have an opportunity to send some of their top individual golfers.

 After the top two teams in league qualify, it is the next six top individual golfers within league play who also will go on to play in the Sectionals. There is a strong chance that both Vysotska and Arnold will both make it if they continue their solid play for the remainder of the fall season. As it stands, Vysotska is ranked No. 3 of those next six individual golfers, with Arnold right behind her at No. 4. 

The Lady Lancers have two more league matches against Kennedy and West Park before the second Metro League tournament to close out the regular season on Monday, Oct. 12 back at River Oaks Golf Course in Nicolaus.
