RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Cordova Lancers senior cross country standout David Insco is running away from the competition, literally. 

During the Lancers’ last two cross country events, Insco has broken school records in both the 5K and three-mile races, with both previous records having been in place for several decades. During the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12 at River Oaks Golf Course and Event Center in Ceres, Insco set a new school record in the 5K with a time of 15:17.8. The previous record of 15:55 was set by Brian McInnes in 1985, with that number standing 41 years until now.

One week later during the 45th Annual Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in Great Park, Insco set a new three-mile school record with a time of 14:54.9. That mark beat out the previous record of 15:31 that had stood since 1977. For Lancers’ Head Coach Charlie Gonzalez, he is happy for Insco because it validates all the hard work he’s put in.

“It’s exciting,” Gonzalez said. "It's brought a lot of attention to the program, and everyone is congratulating him. All his hard work is paying off."

Coming into the season, Insco had his sight set on breaking the three-mile record, and Gonzalez said he had belief that he would do just that if he stayed the course. According to Gonzalez, Insco runs roughly 70 miles per week, which is at the top of any cross-country runners that Gonzalez has coached during his nine years of experience. So now that he's broken long-standing school records, what else does the upperclassman want to accomplish?

"He wants to go to State individually and I think that's an achievable goal if everything goes right," Gonzalez said. "I know he wants to go to Sections as a team and with performances like that, it's possible."
