SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) – On Oct. 7, local dignitaries, law enforcement officials, cyclists and other Caltrans partners gathered at Cal Expo to celebrate the completion of the $288 million American River Bridge Rehabilitation Project.

The rehabilitation project of the American River Bridge on State Route 51/Capital City Freeway from north of the B street underpass to north of the Exposition Boulevard overcrossing in Sacramento included replacing the bridge deck, protecting the bridge piers from scour, and adding a Class I bicycle path, creating a dedicated bicycle connection across the American River.

“This project aligns with Caltrans’ mission of improving lives and communities through transportation,” said Caltrans District 3 Director Sergio Aceves. “The bridge is safer, ride quality is improved, and it provides new access for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The improved bridge provides a multimodal connection between downtown and eastern Sacramento, linking residents and travelers to medical centers, employment opportunities and major activity hubs.

The rehabilitation helps preserve a critical piece of Sacramento’s transportation infrastructure while providing a safer, more durable and more connected route across the American River.
