RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - City Hall moved outdoors Oct. 14 as Rancho Cordova residents gathered at Gold Rush Park for the city’s third Good Neighbor Day.

The event brought city officials, staff and community organizations into the neighborhood, giving residents an opportunity to learn about local programs and services while taking part in free family activities.

Vice Mayor Linda Budge said the event is designed to make city services more accessible and create opportunities for residents to interact with staff outside of City Hall.

“Most people think about getting city services by going over to City Hall or different departments,” Budge said. “But that’s not the way we do things. We go out in neighborhoods and bring city services out there.”

Booths from the city and partner organizations provided information and resources throughout the evening. Residents could visit the different tables using an event passport, while city staff had an opportunity to speak with community members in a more informal setting.

Budge said those interactions are important because residents often encounter local government when dealing with a problem.

“Most people connect with their city in a negative way,” Budge said, pointing to experiences such as receiving a parking ticket or dealing with licensing requirements. “This is an opportunity to speak to residents in a different light. This is what the city is all about.”

The free event also leaned into the Halloween season with a costume contest, face painting, a balloon artist and children’s games. Hamburgers, hot dogs and cake pops were served, while participating booths handed out candy.

The City of Rancho Cordova hosted the event with participation from the Cordova Recreation and Park District, community organizations and volunteers.
