RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Lancers Cross Country program has a ton to celebrate following the recent Metro League championship meet held at Hagan Park on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The Cordova Lancers boys’ team were named Metro League champions following an outstanding performance during the meet, with four Lancers finishing in the top six in the three-mile varsity race. Senior David Insco (second place, 15:29.4), junior Caleb Mahoney (third place, 16:04.8), senior Charli Ramirez-Oliva (fourth place, 16:07.8), and sophomore Sahib Singh (sixth place, 16:13.6) each put together impressive performances to lead Cordova.

For Lancers’ Head Coach Charlie Gonzalez, seeing his boys team win the league championship is a huge accomplishment.

“It feels amazing,” Gonzalez said. “It’s an incredible feeling. Very proud of the boys, they worked hard for this.”

The Lancer boys’ team weren’t the only ones to receive a big-time accolade, however. Gonzalez was also named Metro League Coach of The Year. When asked about what the honor meant to him, the coach put it all back on the spectacular student-athletes that made it possible.

“It means a lot,” Gonzalez said. “It’s more of what the athletes were able to do though. I won it, but the boys and the entire team did all the work. They put in the effort, they went on the runs, they worked hard all season. It means a lot because it’s about what the kids were able to do all year that helped me get Coach of The Year.”

Individual runners on both the boys and girl’s teams for Cordova were also recognized as All-Metro League performers this season. The boys team saw Insco, Mahoney, Ramirez-Oliva and Singh each received All-League honors. On the girl’s side, sophomore Mia Joyce took home an All-League award of her own following a third-place finish at the Metro League championship meet with a time of 19:22.5 in the three-mile race.

The program is now looking forward to this weekend’s Sac Joaquin Sub-Section Finals, which takes place on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp. The event will determine how many Lancers will advance to the Sac Joaquin Section Finals the following week.
