In its first of a home-and-home series in Sierra Valley Conference action, the Cordova High School baseball team found itself in close game with Union Mine.
Playing at the Diamondbacks’ field in El Dorado on Tuesday, both teams had limited hits. In the end, Union Mine posted a 2-1 win over the Lancers.
“It was a pitcher’s duel,” said Cordova head coach Dough Hughes, who gave the ball to Jarrett Harris on the mound. “It was a great game played by the Diamondbacks and Lancers.”
Harris went the distance, throwing a three-hitter in the game that lasted only one hour, 25 minutes.
While pitching and defense was the name of the game for Cordova and Union Mine, the bats were quiet for the Lancers, who had only two hits.
Yesterday, Thursday, the two teams played again at the Lancers’ field. Going into the game, Cordova is 2-4 in the SVC and 3-7-1 overall.
Franklin 8, Cordova 7
On April 2nd, the Lancers hosted Franklin of Stockton in a non-league game that was very thrilling in the seventh inning.
Trailing by an 8-2 score, the Lancers scored five runs in the final inning. Cordova’s offensive attack was led by Spencer Gudgel, who went 4-for-4 at the plate. He also started the game on the hill, which was his first of the season.
“We came from behind to almost get the win,” Hughes said. “We don’t quit and never give up…I’m sure we will turn it around.”
Rosemont 11, Cordova 1
To close out the first round of SVC action in Sacramento on March 31st, the Lancers had only four hits in the game.
Cranking out hits at the plate for Cordova were Logan Appino, Jerimiah Anderson, Gudgel and Jeremy Buck, who smacked a double.
Cordova scored its only run in the top of the first inning. Rosemont sent two across the plate in its first at-bat for a 2-1 lead. The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings when the host Wolverines scored four and five runs respectively.
“We could do nothing right,” said Hughes, whose Lancers committed five errors in the game.
The coach credits the Wolverines toward making contact at the plate in the middle innings.
“Rosemont swung the bats well,” Hughes said.
After Thursday’s home game, Cordova continues SVC action at El Dorado next Tuesday, April 12th. The Lancers and Cougars meet again, this time at the Lancers’ field, on Thursday, April 14th. First pitch for both games is scheduled to go at 4 p.m.
