In a Sierra Valley Conference road game on Tuesday, the Cordova High School baseball team was looking to continue its good fortunes from last week.

Playing at El Dorado, the host Cougars shined as they produced a 12-0 win over Cordova in a game that was called after five innings, implementing the mercy rule.

Cordova (3-5 in the SVC, 4-8-1 overall) was held to one hit in the conference game. El Dorado proceeded to smack 11 hits. In the bottom of the first inning, the Cougars scored six runs and scored their final runs in the third and fourth innings.

“There isn’t much to say about this game,” said Cordova head coach Doug Hughes of Tuesday’s game. “El Dorado hit everything our pitchers threw. They can really swing the bats.”

Yesterday, Thursday, Cordova hosted El Dorado in the home-and-home series finale. Going into that game, Hughes feels his players will move forward from Tuesday’s loss.

“We have to forget about this game and try to get a win,” Hughes said.

Cordova 3, Union Mine 2

On April 7th at home, the Lancers rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to knock off the Diamondbacks, thanks to two freshmen.

With the game tied at 2-2, after the visiting D’backs scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, the Lancers’ Nick Ravareau walked. Then another freshman, Ryan Tipton, sacrificed for Ravareau to get to second base. A timely single by Michael Brown sent Ravareau home with the winning run.

“This was a total team win,” Hughes said. “If the guys weren’t contributing offensively, they were contributing defensively.”

Cordova trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when it scored the tying run. Jerimiah Anderson walked and moved to second on Zach Guerrero’s sacrifice. Then with two outs, Jeremy Buck doubled down the left field line to score Anderson.

The Lancers scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning. Union Mine scored its first run in the top of fifth.

At the plate, Cordova had eight hits. Logan Appino and Buck had two hits each. Guerrero, along with teammates Jordan Meyers, Brown and Jarrett Harris, had a base hit each.

On the mound, Lancer pitcher Austin Smith went the distance in the game, as he struck out two.

After yesterday’s home game, Cordova plays another non-conference game at Bear Creek of Stockton on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Next Tuesday, April 19th, the Lancers resume SVC action at Galt. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
