BIGGS, CA (MPG) - The Lady Wolverines of Biggs High School started the season on a quick hot streak and then cooled down when tournament play came around. But tournament play was what they needed in preparation for the start of league. To get things rolling for their first league game, the Lady Wolverines traveled to Esparto on January 15, 2020 and walked off the court with a 54-32 victory. Two days later on January 17th, the Lady Wolverines hosted Portola in a lopsided 58-26 loss. An away game to Maxwell on January 22nd was just what the team needed to get back into their groove with a 47-28 victory over the Panthers. Two days later, the Lady Wolverines were away again at CORE Butte High School and took a 41-29 victory.
In their most recent matchup on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, the Lady Wolverines tipped off at home against league rival, Quincy High School. This thriller of a game came down to the last few seconds. Each team got off to a good start scoring eight points after the first quarter. Junior guard, Megan Shelton, led the scoring with four of her ten points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, junior guard, Taylor Randolph, and freshman guard, Brianna Rodriguez, each hit timely 3-point shots to help keep the lead for the Lady Wolverines. Junior forward, Lilly Resendez, led the team in scoring with four points in the second quarter to keep a 20-18 lead into halftime.
Both teams got out to a slow start in the second half, each scoring six points to maintain a two point scoring differential going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, Randolph and Shelton stepped up for the team with nine combined points. Senior guard / forward, Nikeisha Gilcrease, came up big for the team with under a minute to play with a timely steal and layup to take a 37-36 lead. With less than thirty seconds to play, the Lady Trojans got a late steal from the Lady Wolverines and looked like they were going to score to take the lead. But a strong defensive stop by a number of players kept the ball out of the basket and the Lady Wolverines won by a score of 37-36.
Randolph led the Lady Wolverines with 13 points; 9 of those 13 points came from 3-point baskets. Shelton scored 10 points in the game. Rodriguez scored 6 points. Resendez scored 4 points. Gilcrease and Haley Rood each scored 2 points in the game.
In a post game interview with Gilcrease, when asked how she felt after coming up with that big steal and the go-ahead basket, she said, “it was just a big relief. I shot it and made it and said alright, we gotta keep our heads in it. They can still make a shot.”
Shelton knew how close the game was getting late in the fourth quarter after trailing by six points. “We have to score fast and not foul.” And after regaining the lead and stopping that last attempt from the Trojans, Shelton had just one word to describe how she felt, “relieved.”
The Lady Wolverines improved 4-1 (10-11 overall) to begin league.
