RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Coming off their very first league championship last year, the Cordova boys soccer team has certainly lived up to any expectations Head Coach Eric MaCahon had for his squad. Coach McCahon said, “We have a solid core of players back from last season’s co-championship and section playoff quarterfinals”.
Coach McCahon purposely put together a tough non-league schedule to help prepare for another tough season of Greater Sacramento League (GSL) play and hopefully another run in the playoffs. As the GSL 22-23 season wraps up league play, the Lancers find themselves in 2nd place behind Valley. The Lancers are currently 11-7-1 and 7-3 in league competition. “The boys really came together after winning the Ponderosa Tournament back in December,” said Coach McCahon.
Offensively, the team is led by senior forward/midfielder Christian Gonzalez who has 14 goals and 19 assists for the year with 2 games remaining. Gonzalez currently is leading the league in the scoring category with 43 points. Senior Aldrick Bejines is the team’s midfield playmaker with the great ability of playing both sides of the ball. Another outstanding player is junior forward Giovanni Reyes, who has been a major catalyst all season. Together with senior winger Antonio Gamez and junior winger Christian Rodriguez, this group of players according to Coach McCahon is easily one of the most talented offensive groups he has ever had the pleasure of coaching. To date (February 5th) they have scored 53 goals in 19 matches with two matches still to play.
Defensively, the Lancers are led by an all-junior back line in Mateo Munoz, Alex Jauregui, and Steven Myatt. Junior goalkeeper Drake Garner rounds out a very solid and very talented group. “It’s a privilege coaching this young group of men who have come together to represent their school and their community at the highest levels,” said Coach McCahon.
Coach McCahon is in his 18th season at the helm of Cordova boys soccer, and he couldn’t be more delighted on how the program has developed throughout the years. This year is even more exciting for Coach McCahon because one of his former players, Pedro Garcia, has stepped up to the role as the JV Coach. “He (Pedro) does an incredible job developing our freshmen and sophomores,” said Coach McCahon.
I’m very impressed with this group of young players. The match that I came out to watch and photograph happened to be in 43-degree weather. They won 5-1 against Johnson. Never before have I witnessed so many shots on goal and such a relentless defense, keeping the ball in their offensive control most of the match. They never slowed down or lost focus during play one bit. This team is a great example of all the hard work, dedication and ethos Coach McCahon brings to the program.
Check the Cordova High website for more information regarding time and locations for the post-season play. I wish them all the best and a very sincere congratulations on a job well done. Go Big Red!
